Workshop/apd is a design firm founded in 1999 with offices in New York City and Nantucket, Mass. In addition to focusing on sustainable building, the firm specializes in high-end residential renovations, new home construction, and commercial development. It also designs custom furniture, lights, and landscaping. The firm has a modern and progressive understanding of contemporary living. And it is known for reconciling difficult existing conditions with well-developed designs. Its approach is to look beyond singular, current trends to the multiple perspectives that make up society. Its work has been published in The New York Times, Metropolitan Home, Architectural Record, New York Home, Residential Architect, Domus, House Beautiful, and Interior Design. Workshop/apd was also named one of New York’s top 50 designers by New York Home.
MEET THE LEADERS
Matthew Berman and Andrew Kotchen are principal designers and co-founders of workshop/apd. Berman received a bachelor of arts degree from Lehigh University and a masters of architecture from Columbia University. He is also a visiting professor at the Pratt Institute and a member of the planning board of Asbury Park, NJ.
Kotchen received a bachelor of arts degree from Lehigh University and a master of architecture from the University of Michigan. In 2006, Berman and Kotchen won the Sustainable Design Competition for New Orleans, sponsored by Brad Pitt and Global Green USA. The 120-occupant, eco-friendly project recently broke ground. Since winning the competition, Berman and Kotchen have been invited to speak around the world about their unique take on rebuilding New Orleans with "green" architecture and their revolutionary approach to bringing ecologically sound design to low-cost housing.
