Stefco Builders in Needham Heights, Mass., is a full-service building company that does everything from renovations to building custom homes to historic restorations throughout Greater Boston and the suburbs. With a staff of 10, led by owner Stefanos Efstratoudakis, it completes between 8 and 12 projects a year, both residential and commercial.
It works closely with architects and designers and, Efstratoudakis said, "We stay true to the design and to good building principals, which is not as easy as it sounds." In projects of its own design, the firm creates "a modern layout with a New England flair." Stefco prides itself on being very strong technically, with a high level of scrutiny in the field, and with having great relationships with the best subcontractors. "We are not in business by chance or because the wind blows the right way," said Efstratoudakis. "We are in this because we are all professionals in this industry." Still, he added, "We want to keep it light and fun. We are really easy to get along with, which is part of our success." Stefco has won many awards, including the Builders Association of Greater Boston’s Remodeler of the Year in 2000 and Builder of the Year in 2006.

MEET THE LEADERS

As a small boy growing up in Greece, Stefanos Efstratoudakis dreamed of becoming an architect. When he was in high school, however, he realized his skill set would be better suited for building and construction. He came to the United States at 17 and went on to Northeastern University, where he earned a degree in structural engineering. He also became proficient in construction management and worked for several large construction companies. But, he said, "Big companies were not for me." He began doing renovations in Boston’s Back Bay and in 1997 started his own company, Stefco Builders in Needham Heights, Mass. "The number one thing is I wanted to have fun every day," Efstratoudakis said. Today, he oversees a staff of 10 and is involved in every project. "The best times of a project are when you first start and the last moment when you give the key to the owner," he said. It’s very exciting." He is the 2008 president of the Builders Association of Greater Boston, of which he has been a member 13 years. He is also a member of the Boston Society of Architects.
