Looking for inspiration for your own big renovation project? Look no further than Boston’s own Liberty Hotel, where we recently visited and observed its historical significance and the remarkable conversion from historic jail to luxury hotel.
Built in 1851, the Charles Street Jail was a great example of "Boston Granite Style" of the mid-19th century. It held famous prisoners including James Michael Curley, Malcolm X, Sacco and Vanzetti, and more. Today, however, the only remants of the jail can be found in the historic structure itself, including the distinguished rotunda, as it is now home to one of the most luxurious hotels in Boston; the Liberty Hotel.
Take a look inside this fascinating property with Local Leaders founder Stephen Moylan, as he gives a brief history of the former jail up until its current state. Inside, all the structure and style is renovated with a modern twist, including the windows, catwalks, jail cells, iron work and more, as tradition meets innovation.
This transformation of the Charles Street Jail into the Liberty Hotel -- while still paying homage to the original “Boston Granite Style” -- took years of team work, vision and determination. But in the end, the result was spectacular and this beautifully renovated National Historic Landmark is a gem sitting at the foot of Boston’s Beacon Hill.
The renovation project cost about $120 million, with about $14 million in state and federal taxes credits because so much of the building was preserved. Take a look inside!
